A wild boar appears in a residential area in Sasebo city and attacks residents

At around 7:55 a.m. on October 1, a wild boar appeared in a residential area of ​​Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and bit the hands of two people. The victims were a 59-year-old man in a wheelchair and an 89-year-old woman, both of whom were seriously injured, breaking their fingers.

In addition, while the police and hunting clubs were on guard after colliding with mopeds and cars, a wild boar that was believed to have attacked the two was discovered in the city in the afternoon and exterminated. It was a female wild boar with a body length of about 1.2 meters and an estimated weight of 70-79 kg.

After the above-mentioned damage occurred, the police and fire department, which received a report from the eyewitness, promptly provided information to Sasebo City, and the city contacted the Hunting Association for capture. Residents in the vicinity of the site were alerted by disaster prevention radio systems and flyers.

This year was the first report of boar damage caused by wild boars in Nagasaki Prefecture. In response to this, Nagasaki Prefecture held a liaison meeting with related departments on October 5, and confirmed a policy to prepare for the future appearance of wild animals such as wild boars by creating a manual that stipulates the communication system and roles of related organizations. The prefectural police department also attended the meeting.
